A couple of years ago I bought Andra a “Cricut Mini” stencil cutter forChristmas. This was a BAD MISTAKE.

It turns out that the company that makes these has locked them down so that theonly designs you can cut with it are ones that they provide. In particular,there’s a small collection of free designs, then you have to buy others fromthem. There was no way of loading your own designs in, and the company inquestion threatened legal action against anyone who tried to reverse engineerthe system.

That was bad enough, but Andra did make use of some of the free designs. Untila few weeks back when the software stopped working. The company recentlyannounced that they were no longer supporting this model. Judging by the numberof people saying their hardware has stopped working, it appears that they haveremote-disabled the software, rendering every “Cricut Mini” on the planetunusable. One would imagine that’s illegal, but I’m sure they’ll have it tieddown in some small print somewhere.

Anyway, a while back Andra ran across a hardware hack that someone had done,“TeensyCNC”. They’d desoldered the maincontroller chips from inside the Cricut and had replaced them with their ownmicrocontroller circuit which could receive and cut arbitrary designs. Itwasn’t something we wanted to risk while the Cricut was still usable, so wasjust an interesting aside at the time.

Now, of course, with the machine unusable, it became much more interesting. TheTeensyCNC project wasn’t brilliantly documented, and the firmware had a fewoddities that I wasn’t happy with. So I’ve spent most evenings this weekfiguring out how it all connected up, doing some scarily fine soldering workand modifying the open source firmware to do things a bit more to my liking.

Today, I finally got it working to the point that Andra was able to loadpictures into Inkscape (a vector drawing package), send them to the modifiedCricut and get correctly cut stencils out. This is something that wasimpossible with the original software, so I’m very very pleased with theresult.

I just found a used Cricut mini for $15. I can’t afford much for health reasons, but I’d like to get this thing working for basic projects. I did find, I believe, the TeensyCNC project you had mentioned, but I was hoping to get your assistance with your firmware updates, and the like.

Hi Jacob,
I submitted my changes to the firmware back to the maintainer of TeensyCNC. He also improved his notes in response to my comments. If you’re confident with soldering and familiar with programming microcontrollers (e.g. Arduino), you should be able to get it working using the stuff on his site.

I’m not sure I can contribute much more at this late stage (it’s been months since I did the work), but I’ll have a look at the Cricut tonight and see whether it jogs my memory. If so, I’ll write another blog entry.

Hi Alun: for someone like me who is a noob, following a circuit assembly without an actual diagram is a challenge.

could you:

a. provide a circuit diagram that shows the 2 PICs, power any pull down or up resistors and cabling?
b. provide the steps necessary to load and run the software in the project.
c. provide a simple hello world type project to test the system
d. a sample picture of one completed cut output job?
e. a bill of materials necessary for the project

Hi Ken,

It’s not my project - for the basic build, I just followed the instructions on the TeensyCNC GitHub site. Didn’t need to add any pull up/down resistors, it’s just a matter of desoldering the PIC chips (see the photos on GitHub), carefully soldering wires to the vacated pads, then connecting a Teensy 3.2 as documented on the site.

The site includes a precompiled firmware, a firmware loader for getting software onto the Teensy, and a GCODE sender for sending designs to the modded Cricut.

We use Inkscape for making designs, with its gcodetools plugin to convert them to GCODE.

As I said to Jacob, it’s been quite a while since I did this stuff, so I’ve not got much to add. I didn’t get around to taking the Cricut apart the other night but, if I ever do, I’ll certainly take a few photos etc.

Hi Ken,

I was gifted a redundant Cricut Mini by one of my wife’s friends and set about implementing Matt William’s TeensyCNC hack. Like you I found that the hack was not well documented but I got there in the end.

For fun I documented the various stages in some detail in a ‘How To’ pdf, so if either of your other two contributors see this and are still wanting to have a go at the hack I would be happy to provide them with a copy.

I want to thanks the moderator of this post. I personal got encouraged to do this project since I got my cricut mini and learn that I was not able to use it again I began searching for hacks all over and came across this amazing page. I already got my Teensy 4.0 and I’m ready to star building this project but I saw that in the pictures from the Author of the TeensyCNC is not clear what a have to bridge regarding the 2 ‘000’ SMD capcitors. What I should do exaclty? One of the SMDs is clear connecting the to points where the it used to be(Purple Wire) but the other one appear to be connecting 3 points or even 4 points wiht he resistor I need help there.
